The Maid of Honor's Bachelorette Party Checklist That Actually Works
If you're the maid of honor, you already know the bachelorette party somehow becomes your responsibility the moment the engagement is announced. I'm currently planning one of two of these at the moment, for two different brides, on two different timelines, so this checklist isn't theoretical. It's what's actually on my list right now.
Start here: the 3 decisions that unlock everything else
Before you book a single thing, get the bride to answer three questions. Everything else on this list depends on these:
- Weekend trip or single night out? This changes your entire budget and timeline.
- Who's the real guest list? Not the wish list, who will actually show up and pay their share.
- What does the bride actually want? Not what Pinterest says a bachelorette should look like.
The 4-6-month-out checklist
- Lock the date with the bride first, then check it against work schedules for the closest 2-3 guests.
- Create a shared group chat or planning doc. I use a simple shared note so nobody is left guessing on payments.
- Set a per-person budget range and communicate it early, so nobody is blindsided.
- Book the big-ticket item first, like the venue, rental home, or reservation. These sell out fastest. Check with local hotels, VRBOs, Airbnbs, and do not be afraid to contact venue owners directly to see about booking through them to save on fees that some hosting websites charge. We saved ourselves several hundred dollars.
Planning tool that's actually saved me
A shared digital checklist app makes it easy to assign tasks to bridesmaids instead of doing everything yourself. Worth setting up before the group chat gets chaotic.
The 1-3-month-out checklist
- Confirm headcount and collect final payments.
- Order or assemble any personalized items, like sashes, matching gear, or welcome bags.
- Build a simple day-of itinerary. Even a loose one prevents the "what are we doing now" lull.
- Pack an emergency kit: bobby pins, safety pins, stain wipes, pain relievers, and a portable charger.
The welcome bag items guests actually use
Skip the novelty items nobody touches. A portable phone charger and a reusable water bottle get used every single time, so they are worth the small splurge.
Don't forget to be extra
Check out Etsy listings for Canva websites to help keep all information in one area. It is the small and cute initiatives that will be appreciated later. There are also tons of free games listed on Canva that you can edit and personalize for the occasion.
What nobody tells you
The maid of honor role isn't really about the party itself. It is about being the calm, organized point of contact so the bride does not have to think about logistics at all that weekend. The best compliment I've gotten wasn't "great party," it was "I didn't have to worry about anything."
